Last season, Almeria CF got off to a flying start, reaching the semi final of the Clausura before being knocked out by eventual champions Real Madrid. Despite this early blunder, things began looking up for Almeria in the second half of the season. Led by the impressive brace of youngsters such as Mateo Costa (now at AC Milan) and youngster Pablo Campos, they quickly established themselves as one of the automatic qualification holders for the top four. However, despite being an exciting side, they often seem to lose their way in big games, often taking risks that backfire on them. Part of the problem can be attributed to the form of Almeria centre forward, scorer brilliantly once, now Riba, who seems to have lost his fire in big games. Perhaps a more experienced player with more patience and game time would have prevented this trend, but nonetheless it is worrying.

Another major problem facing Almeria this season has been the form of their defence, which has not impressed in either cup matches or in the league so far. The defence has been hit by injuries, most notably to right back Aminouli and left centre back Afolabiye. Neither are necessarily the best central defensive pairing, but both have been unfortunate to suffer injuries, costing the club valuable fixtures. Injuries to Riba and Thierry Henry (both of whom are still leading the line for France) as well as missing out through illness to defender Gael Clichy and forwards Kevin Gross and Harry Zambezi have also done substantial damage.

Despite this worry, Almeria have picked up a few key points and are comfortably poised to finish above Real Madrid in the Clausura. It will not be easy for them to overturn the favourites but the current state of their team means that it is entirely possible. If they do lose to eventual winners Real Madrid, then they have a chance of coming back stronger than they have since the Nou Stadium arrival. However, with such a great season ahead, it will surely be the season of the conqueror.
